How do they fill these with water/ fire retardant?
In the simplest term, they hook it up to a fire hydrant. The long story is there is a tanker base that can be set up that takes in water mixes it with the chosen chemical fire retardant, and then they pump it into the airplane. The airplane has enclosed storage tanks for the water where the passengers normally sit.

My dad was in the oss in cbi in wwll , he was a photographer and flew missions over Burma, China and French Indochina taking aerial photos . He was brought into "thus man's army " on a ship on its way into New York. He mustered out on 29 Dec 1945 . Growing up he NEVER talked about what he did , I got an idea by the many photographs he had . Before he died in 85 we Finally talked about what he did , what he saw and who he met . He told me when they mustered out all oss signed 30 year non disclosures with penalties of treason . Damn shame it took all those years to know what amazing things my dad did !!
